Youth Week 2017 was a huge success!

Every year the Abbotsford Youth Commission celebrates BC Youth Week from May 1st – 7th together with more than 30 other communities across our province. The week aims to recognize the positive contributions youth make in our communities and to celebrate the valuable work youth and youth organizations do all year round. At the AYC we always plan a fun filled week of activities and events and this year was no exception.

Highlights of 2017 included:

• a Cake Boss event with 20 youth competing for the grand prize,
• our annual URoc Awards . . . well, what can we say . . . another great year for URoc. Ten awards were given out to people who do great work with youth and to youth who have done amazing things. We had 110 people come to show their support for our winners . . . however we suspect that some just showed up because of our famous ice cream sundae bar,
• a three on three basketball tournament that was planned and delivered by our LEAD youth leadership team,
• a jeopardy game to teach youth about their rights in the workforce – can you believe we had 14 youth participate in this event? We have such great youth! Not to mention our youth workers who know how to make learning about life skills fun! Thanks Worksafe for the grant that made the food and prizes possible,
• a fan favorite for years now has been having members of the APD come out to our floor hockey program against the youth. This year things were tipping in the APD’s favour until all 24 youth decided to play on the youth side all at once tipping the odds (just slightly) ;),
• our youth leadership team wanted to plan an event this year and they decided to do ‘Acts of Kindness’ for first responders. The youth dropped off baskets filled to the brim with goodies that each had an inspirational tag thanking them for their service,
• we were also able to offer a toonie skate and a toonie swim in partnership with the City of Abbotsford
• and finally to finish off the week – Dodgeball Mania! A great way to end the week for sure!
