Youth Council

Youth Council is a formal ‘Board’ of young people in grades 10-12 that provide representation or a ‘voice’ for youth in our community.

Do you have ideas for positive change in our community? Do you inspire to be a community leader? Join the Abbotsford Youth Commission’s Youth Council to meet with other youth, have your say, get involved, and make a difference!

Youth Council Members Will Learn

  • Leadership skills
  • Special event planning
  • Conflict resolution, mediation and negotiation
  • How to listen effectively
  • Public speaking
  • How to work as a team
  • About local politics
  • How to chair a meeting and take minutes
  • How to advocate for your rights and needs


  • Attend a weekend leadership retreat
  • Attend community meetings and share a youth perspective on specific issues eg. the need for skateboard parks and other recreational opportunities, drugs & alcohol, violence, racism, drop-in centres, emergency youth shelters, and the list goes on and on


  • Become a community leader
  • Meet and shadow a City Councillor or the Mayor
  • Learn leadership and employment skills
  • Have your voice heard
  • Plan and participate in youth driven projects and special events
  • Be a youth representative from your school
  • FREE food at monthly meetings
  • Get a letter of reference from the Youth Commission
  • Volunteer hours
  • Tons of opportunities to get your ideas across to others (and really be listened to)

How to Join

  • Fill out the Youth Council Application form and set up a time for an interview at the AYC. Applications are also available at the Abbotsford Youth Commission.

Youth Focus
