Guys Alive!
Guys Alive! is a preventative program for grade seven boys.
There is a growing awareness that our boys need help in
safely making the transition from adolescence to manhood. In light of this awareness weve created a program in order to help boys develop the skills and character to successfully make this transition.
Format
of the program:
- Introduction to the program
- Team building games
- Discussion topic: self and self-esteem
- Discussion topic: understanding and expressing our feelings
- Discussion topic: relationships with other boys
- Games day
- Discussion topic: boy/girl relationships
- Discussion topic: family/male role models
- Discussion topic: bullying
- Evaluation and pizza party
The main objective of guys alive is to provide a safe place where grade 7 boys can make some good friends and become acquainted with positive male role models. In this safe environment it is hoped that the members of the group will begin to explore their feelings, talk about issues concerning their lives and develop skills that will help them become well rounded men.
Format of sessions:
Grade 7 boys are given a short presentation about the program and then given an opportunity to join. A maximum of twelve boys can participate in a group. Each session takes place over the lunch hour and so the first 10 15 minutes of each session will be kept open for the boys to eat their lunch. The first couple of sessions are set up to allow the boys to get to know each other and the facilitators before they move into talking about specific topics. In the remaining weeks, except for the sixth and the tenth weeks, there are specific topics addressed. Each topic is addressed in a way that will keep the boys interested and enable them to open up.
About the program:
The program
is run by the Guys Alive coordinator and trained facilitators. They work under the
Executive Director at the Abbotsford Youth Commission.
Physically active and interactive games are played to illustrate issues being discussed and encourage group involvement. The games are also structured to be fun and engaging in order to draw the boys into the learning process.
Participants experiences are listened to and validated. Discussion, role plays, and group brainstorming are used to work through the issues and help each boy develop a positive sense of self and his abilities.
